  • 1.  Interview Essay Component Grading Services

    Posted 08-09-2023 11:01 PM

    Hello everyone,

Our office is exploring potential essay grading services to evaluate our written portion of the  interview process. I was wondering if there were recommendations for any companies/services. Have some of you continued using on-campus resources or solutions such as recruiting volunteers, collaborating with other departments, etc?

I look forward to your insight.

We used an online tool called Paper Rater when I moved into admissions a few years ago. I dropped it after a year because I didn't feel like it was a useful tool. Now, I grade them myself. We ask the students to write a narrative and not a complicated essay so I feel like the grading system we use is pretty straightforward. Most students get a 3 or 4. Really good narratives get a 5. Very few students get a 2. I've never given a 1.

We use Slate. Essays are captured via Slate and some custom Slate rules automatically push all submitted essays to a single designated person who grades each according to a rubric assessing three areas on a 1-5 scale. Based on the grader's inputs, Slate calculates a score which gets posted on their application record. Because everything except actually reading the essay is automated, turnaround is always less than one day and manageable by one grader, which keeps scoring consistent and equitable.
