From Values to Vocation: Finding Your Why

When:  May 20, 2026 from 03:00 PM to 04:00 PM (ET)

Hosted by the Substance Use Disorder SIG

Faculty careers in pharmacy are often shaped by deeply held values, formative experiences, mentorship, and a sustained commitment to service. This webinar will explore professional identity formation through the lived experiences of faculty who have dedicated their careers to substance use disorder (SUD)–related work in education, clinical practice, research, advocacy, and community engagement. Rather than focusing on SUD content itself, this session uses these faculty narratives as a lens to examine how purpose, meaning, and professional identity develop and evolve over time.

Panelists will reflect on how they initially found their “why,” how that purpose has shifted across different career stages, and how they continue to align personal values with professional roles amid competing demands, institutional pressures, and moments of uncertainty. The discussion will intentionally translate these insights to the broader faculty experience, highlighting how intentional identity formation can support fulfillment, resilience, and longevity across any pharmacy specialty.

Objectives:

  • Explain key components of professional identity formation using faculty career narratives viewed through the lens of SUD-focused work.
  • Reflect on their own personal and professional “why” and identify how values, experiences, and mentorship shape career decisions across pharmacy disciplines.
  • Identify practical strategies for sustaining purpose and alignment between personal values and professional roles throughout different stages of a faculty or pharmacy career.
