Hosted by the Leadership Development SIG
Leadership in academic institutions extends beyond formal titles or positional authority; it is a shared responsibility cultivated through everyday influence and actions. In response to rising faculty turnover, leadership transitions, and evolving educational and practice demands, colleges and schools of pharmacy must adopt intentional strategies to identify, develop, and retain talent. This session will introduce foundational concepts for effective succession planning across mission-critical faculty and staff roles and explore how leadership pipelines—focused on readiness rather than replacement—can strengthen resilience and sustain the institutional mission during periods of transition and change.
Objectives:
- Describe succession planning as a shared organizational responsibility and evaluate evidence-informed approaches.
- Identify mission-critical roles and examine methods for early identification of high-potential leaders.
- Explore strategies to develop and retain internal talent, including mentoring, professional development, and career pathway planning.
- Consider practical action steps to support succession planning efforts within their institutions.
