Thinking Outside the Lecture:  Evaluating Critical Thinking Skills in Laboratory Courses

The development of problem-solving skills was emphasized as a Key Element in the ACPE Standards 2016, with graduates gaining the skills to  “identify problems; explore and prioritize potential strategies; and design, implement, and evaluate a viable solution.”  In order to assess a student pharmacist’s ability to problem solve, it is important to provide opportunities to practice critical thinking.  This webinar will provide examples of ways to incorporate critical thinking activities and assessments within pharmacy practice laboratory courses.


  • Describe how desirable difficulties can be used to facilitate critical thinking about sterile compounding problem-solving strategies and brainstorm additional applications for desirable difficulties in a practice laboratory setting
  • Discuss the use of podcasts as a means to promote critical thinking and self-reflection
  • Review the use of a self-reflection rubric as a means to assess students’ critical thinking
  • Discuss how two courses use the same patient case to assess students’ critical thinking in relation to provider questions and therapeutic recommendations
